Character Analysis - Theodore Laurence | LW

Character Research/Analysis:

Theodore Laurence, also known as "Laurie," is a pivotal character in Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women. He is the grandson of the wealthy Mr. Laurence, who lives next door to the March family. Laurie is introduced as a young, impulsive boy, but he quickly becomes a close friend of the March sisters and a prominent figure in the novel/movie's plot. 

One of the most significant aspects of Laurie's character is his desire for companionship and affection. He is an only child, and his parents are often absent, leaving him feeling lonely and disconnected. This loneliness is perhaps why he is initially drawn to the March sisters, particularly Jo, who shares his adventurous spirit and energetic personality. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that Laurie's desire for companionship goes beyond mere friendship. He develops romantic feelings for Jo, but she does not reciprocate them, leading to a great deal of heartbreak for Laurie. 

Despite his disappointment, Laurie remains loyal to the March family and proves himself to be a reliable friend in times of need. He is there to comfort the girls when their father is away at war, and he helps them financially when they face financial difficulties. He also plays a crucial role in bringing Jo and her eventual husband, Professor Bhaer, together, showing that he is capable of putting his own feelings aside for the sake of others. 

Another important aspect of Laurie's character is his transformation from a reckless boy to a responsible adult. At the beginning of the story, Laurie is portrayed as impulsive and often makes poor decisions, such as getting drunk at a party and almost falling off a roof. However, as he grows closer to the March family, he begins to mature and become more responsible. He learns to take his studies seriously, and he becomes a responsible member of his grandfather's business. By the end, he is a successful young man with a promising future ahead of him. Overall, Theodore Laurence is a complex and well-developed character in Little Women. His desire for companionship, loyalty to the March family, and personal growth all contribute to his rich and engaging personality.
