Laurie’s Monologue | LW

This is my written monologue for my audition as Theodore Laurence, in this particular scene I wished to portray Laurie acting within one of Jo's plays as the villain! I thought it would be good to highlight his playful side as well as his devotion to make Jo happy without it being overly affectionate.

"Why must I wear this silly moustache? Oh very well!

I am tired of being looked down upon, seen as nothing but a foolish boy with too much time and too much money. But they will all pay for their mockery. I will not be underestimated any longer. I will rise to the top, and they will tremble at my feet- Jo, I have the slightest feeling that this part was written rather personally! Ahem. I, Hugo the Black, shall take thee as my bride! I am deserved my happy ending, and so I shall have one, with... Thy Miss March! No longer will my competition throw me to the way! Sir Roderigo is no more! And so I come up victorious this day!  "

I decided to not focus on the love thrilled side of Laurie as is mostly connotated with his character! I see him as a boy who doesn’t care much for sociable expectations but still conforms to them where he can. However, in the presence of Jo and the march sisters is when he can express himself truly, and so I wished to convey this in my monologue!

He is not just a one sided character, but a real person with insecurities and people he can share them with!
