Audition - Theodore Laurence | LW

Preparing to become the great Theodore Laurence was a challenge I shall never forget, even before knowing he was the person I wished to audition for in Little Women, I saw him as a character with so much depth. Being someone who has lived a large portion of his life without parents or any father figures to look up to, (John Brooke being more like a big brother to Laurie) Laurie has grown up in an age where he is expected and almost forced to act and express himself in a certain way, while his reel feelings and self are locked away tight from the world.

I had done extensive research for my audition about how Laurie presents himself and his character, I made sure to visit articles about the way people spoke and acted in the 19th century. I watched each movie and made notes as well as compare them to the script in order to gather a clear understanding of each character I might want to aim for.

After running through the audition scene with Kadie multiple times the day before the actual audition, as well as a few times right before, I felt confident in my ability! However, the overwhelming nerves I had for auditions had remained and stayed with me even after I had performed my audition. My rendition of Laurie involves his more playful and charismatic side and I made sure to show that best i could by tweaking the way he interacts with Jo.

During the audition itself, I had to restart the scene due to my nerves getting the better of me and forgetting my line, once I was reminded we started again and I believe we nailed it! Kelly remarked about our chemistry and how it really felt as if she was watched a lovers quarrel. Though I am not proud that we did not get it first try, I am happy with the overall outcome!

I certainly need to work on my auditioning skills and will do so by doing a scene in front of my parents before performing it for real! Hopefully this will relieve my nerves and solidify it into my brain as it wont be the first time I'm performing the scene in front of someone.
